Respecting the Whole Dog: Why We Don’t Dock Corgi Tails at Ironwood Homestead Co.

At Ironwood Homestead Co., we believe animals deserve to be treated with dignity, respect, and compassion — not simply molded for appearance or tradition. One of the choices we’ve made here on our homestead is that we do not dock the tails of our corgis.

For us, this comes down to a very simple principle: if there is no medical reason to remove a part of an animal’s body, we believe it should remain untouched.

Tail docking has historically been normalized in certain dog breeds, including corgis, largely for cosmetic breed standards or outdated working-dog traditions. But today, many veterinarians and animal welfare advocates question the necessity of the practice when performed solely for appearance. A dog’s tail serves important purposes in balance, communication, emotional expression, and body language. Anyone who has spent time around a full-tailed corgi quickly realizes just how expressive and joyful they are.

Corgis themselves are a European breed, and many European countries have moved toward stronger animal welfare protections over the years — including banning cosmetic tail docking except in rare medical circumstances. In many places where corgis originally came from, preserving the dog as it naturally is has become the standard rather than the exception.

Here at Ironwood Homestead Co., we align closely with that perspective.

We value wholesomeness, ethical stewardship, and honoring the natural design of the animals we raise. We believe our role as caretakers is not to alter animals unnecessarily, but to provide them with healthy environments, affection, enrichment, and respect. Their bodies are not decorations — they are living beings with their own instincts, communication, and autonomy.

There is something deeply grounding about allowing animals to simply be what they are.

A corgi racing through the grass with its tail flying behind it is full of personality, confidence, and joy. We love seeing that. We believe preserving that natural expression matters.

Our homestead philosophy has always centered around respect for life, thoughtful husbandry, and creating an environment where animals are treated as companions and sentient beings first — not products shaped around cosmetic expectations.

For us, keeping our corgis whole is simply - an extension of that belief.
